Char Dham

Gangotri, Yamunotri Kedarnath and Badrinath

High in the tranquil folds of the Himalayas lie four revered shrines—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—collectively celebrated as the Char Dham. Every year, these sacred sites welcome vast streams of devotees, making them northern India’s most significant pilgrimage circuit. Pilgrims traditionally journey west to east, starting at Yamunotri, continuing to Gangotri, and concluding with Kedarnath and Badrinath.

  • Yamunotri honors the river‑goddess Yamuna. Faith holds that bathing in her icy waters along the scenic Rawai Valley shields one from premature death.

  • Gangotri pays homage to goddess Ganga, the Bhagirathi River flowing below recalling the legend of King Bhagirath, whose devout penance brought the heavenly river to Earth.

  • Kedarnath, one of the Panch Kedar and the northernmost Jyotirlinga, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple rises near the source of the sacred Mandakini River.

  • Badrinath venerates Lord Vishnu. Set beside the swift Alaknanda, it is said that Vishnu meditated here while his consort Lakshmi stood guard as a berry—or Badri—tree, providing him shelter.

Together, these four destinations form a spiritual arc that blends myth, devotion, and the majestic grandeur of the Himalayas.

Place to Visit

Badrinath

Situated in the serene town of Badrinath in Uttarakhand, the revered Badrinath Temple, also known as Badrinarayan Temple, holds a prominent place among the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit, which includes Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. These sacred destinations attract countless pilgrims every year, forming the spiritual backbone of northern India's religious tourism.

Kedarnath

Set amidst the towering Garhwal Himalayas, Kedarnath is one of India’s most sacred pilgrimage destinations. Perched at an elevation of 3,580 meters, this ancient town is built around the iconic Kedarnath Temple, near the Chorabari Glacier, the origin of the holy Mandakini River.

Gangotri

Gangotri, one of the four sacred sites of the Char Dham pilgrimage in northern India, is a serene town located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. At the heart of this high-altitude settlement lies the Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Set at an elevation of around 3,415 meters, Gangotri is surrounded by the majestic Garhwal Himalayas, dense forests, and icy glaciers, offering a mix of spiritual calm and natural beauty. According to ancient Hindu mythology, it was here that the holy River Ganga descended to the earth when Lord Shiva released her from his matted locks to lessen her impact. Though the river's physical source lies further up at Gaumukh, in the Gangotri Glacier, Gangotri is revered as the spiritual point of her earthly descent. A long but scenic journey of about 12 hours from Rishikesh brings pilgrims to this tranquil and powerful place of worship.

Yamunotri

Yamunotri, one of the four sacred shrines of the Char Dham circuit—alongside Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—marks the starting point of this revered Himalayan pilgrimage. Tucked away in a remote mountain valley, this quaint hamlet is centered around the Yamunotri Temple, which draws countless pilgrims between May and October each year. Nestled in a narrow gorge near the river’s source, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, who is worshipped as the embodiment of the Yamuna River, considered second in sanctity only to the Ganges. According to belief, taking a dip in the icy waters of the Yamuna bestows spiritual purification and shields one from premature death, making Yamunotri not just a destination, but a powerful symbol of faith and protection.
